The candy cane is a classic symbol of Christmas. As the story goes, a European priest invented the candy cane as a way to keep children quiet during his long Christmas sermons. He went to a candy maker and asked him to take peppermint sticks and bend them into the shape of a shepherd's staff, to represent the shepherds who came to visit the baby Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. He shared the candy sticks with the children who came to the Christmas service and they were quiet all night sucking on the delicious sweet treat.
