Sock Hops became popular in the 1950’s as informal dances held for young people in their high school gymnasiums or cafeterias. Many students sported poodle skirts or lettermen jackets, and all were required to remove their hard-soled shoes to protect the gymnasium’s varnished floors, hence the name.
