Everyone knows Saint Valentine's Day is a time for love--to send a special card or bouquet of flowers to a sweetheart or lover. Cupid comes and shoots his magic arrows at young men and women to make them fall in love, and the birds all start to come back from the south just in time for the mating season.
One legend says that the kind of bird an unmarried woman first sees on Valentine's Day will decide what kind of man she will marry. If she saw a robin, she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, her husband would be poor, but they would be happy together. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a very rich man.
